Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON)

Reports To: Director of Nursing (DON)

Position Summary

Western Horizon Living Center is seeking a dedicated and experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to serve as the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) for our 40-bed skilled nursing facility. This leadership role supports the Director of Nursing in overseeing daily clinical operations while also functioning as the facility’s Infection Preventionist and Quality Nurse.

The ADON plays a vital role in ensuring the delivery of high-quality, resident-centered care, maintaining regulatory compliance, and fostering a culture of safety and continuous improvement. Responsibilities include supervision of nursing staff, coordination of the Infection Prevention and Control Program (IPCP), and leadership within the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) program in accordance with CMS and state regulations (42 CFR §483).


Key Responsibilities

Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON)

  • Assist the Director of Nursing in the overall management and supervision of nursing services.
  • Provide clinical leadership and support to nursing staff, including mentoring, coaching, and performance management.
  • Participate in staff scheduling, staffing coordination, and competency validation.
  • Conduct rounds to monitor resident care, ensuring adherence to care plans and clinical standards.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, orientation, and ongoing education of nursing personnel.
  • Serve as acting DON in their absence.
  • Promote effective communication among interdisciplinary team members.
  • Assist with policy development and implementation consistent with regulatory standards.

Infection Preventionist (IP)

  • Lead and manage the facility’s Infection Prevention and Control Program (IPCP) in accordance with CMS §483.80, CDC, and state guidelines.
  • Conduct ongoing infection surveillance, data collection, analysis, and trending of healthcare-associated infections.
  • Develop and implement infection prevention policies and procedures.
  • Provide staff education and competency validation related to infection prevention practices.
  • Oversee outbreak investigation and response, including coordination with public health authorities.
  • Monitor antibiotic stewardship initiatives in collaboration with the medical director and pharmacy consultant.
  • Ensure compliance with employee health requirements, including immunizations and exposure follow-up.
